Few days after it reported a major breakthrough in the search for a cure for the dreaded Coronavirus, Bioresources Institute of Nigeria (BION) says its facilities have come under attack by unknown vandals.

Located at Umuna, Imo State, south east Nigeria, the facility owned by renowned scientist and one time Chairman Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Professor Maurice Iwu, was attacked on Wednesday, March 4 and some infrastructure vandalised.

According to Iwu, who is also the Lead Researcher at the Institute, the attackers destroyed the power infrastructure by cutting and carting away the armored cable that connects the transformer to the main generator, the electric metering system and the automatic power stabilization unit.

He said production has stopped at the facility.

KaftanPost learnt though there is a police station situated in front of the Institute, which ironically was built by BION, the hoodlums had a field day as no policemen were in sight to stop them.

Apparently shocked by the incident, Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzordinma, accompanied by his deputy and Secretary to the State Government visited the Institute of Friday to inspect and assess the damage.
