The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed a record-breaking 86 new coronavirus cases in the country.

The health agency made this known just before midnight on Sunday via tweet.

According to NCDC, Lagos State alone garnered 70 cases, taking the epicentre’s toll to 376.

While the Federal Capital Territory recorded seven cases, Katsina and Akwa Ibom States had two fresh infections.

Jigawa, Kano and Borno all contributed one new cases each, taking the nation’s overall tally to 627.

Sunday’s numbers is an incredible surge from the paltry five cases a week ago, rising a red flag over what to expect in the coming weeks.

The NCDC also announced two casualties, now 21 since the first was reported almost a month ago.

In terms of recoveries, just four tested negative, signalling a steady decline.

In total, 170 persons have been discharged, averaging one recovery in almost four cases.
