COVID-19: ‘Be careful with fraudsters within this period’, CBN warns

The Central Bank of Nigeria has warned the general public to be wary of cyber criminals who are exploiting the period to defraud citizens.

The warning was issued in a release signed by the Director , Corporate Communications , Issac Okoroafor.

According to the apex financial institution of Nigeria,”criminals are stealing useful information and gaining unauthorized access to computers or mobile devices using various techniques.”

They outilined the tricks by the frausters to include phishing campaigns,which involves sending out emails claiming to be from health organisations such as Nigerian Centre for Disease Control(NCDC) or World Health Organisation (WHO),Relief Packages which involves sending out links to register for COVID-19 packages.

They warned that the public should “Beware of and verify emails claiming to be from NCDC ,WHO or government especially when such emails request for banking information. Avoid clicking on links or attachments in emails that claim to have more information regarding the covid 19 pandemic. Avoid downloading mobile applications from untrusted sources.Obtain relief packages or other information from trusted news media”

The CBN assured Nigerians of their resolve to protect their vital information and ready to help fight the invasion of fraudsters while the period lasts.
