West Africa is rapidly approaching 30,000 positive cases of COVID-19, according to figures released by the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS).

As at Monday, May 25th, the subregion has recorded exactly 29,772 cases, 11,827 recoveries and 627 fatalities.

Nigeria, the most populous nation, unsurprisingly, though, is the worst-hit with over 8,000 cases.

This means the country with over 200 million persons accounts for almost 30 per cent of the infections.

It is closely followed by Ghana with 6,808 cases albeit the old Gold Coast is miles ahead of Nigeria in terms of testing.

Equatorial Guinea (3,322), Senegal (3,130) and Cote d’Ivoire (2,463) complete the top five worst-hit nations in the region.

On the other side, however, there is the Gambia and Benin Republic with 25 and 191 cases respectively.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation on Tuesday reported that coronavirus cases in Africa as of May 26, have risen to over 115, 000.

The WHO Regional Office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo, gave the update on its official twitter handle @WHOAFRO.

“There are over 115,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases on the African continent – with more than 46,000 recoveries and 3,400 deaths,” it said.

The figures showed that South Africa, Algeria, and Nigeria have the highest reported cases in Africa.
