Defending champions, Algeria, have crashed out of the Africa Cup of Nations following the 3-1 defeat suffered against Ivory Coast in Douala.

The former champions needed a win to remain in the tournament but were unable to withstand the force from Ivory Coast.

Franke Kessie capped off a fine move to hand his team the lead and Ibrahim Sangare’s heading extended it to 2-0 before the break.

After the break, Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe put the Ivorians 3-0 up before Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez hit a penalty against the post.

Djamel Belmadi’s men are the third holders to exit at the first hurdle in the past five Nations Cup finals.
