The Edo State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has promised its predisposition to join the National Human Rights Commission, (NHRC) to put an end to the violence against women and girl child in the state.

Chairman of the council, Sir Roland Osakue, yesterday, Tuesday, December 8, 2020 made this pledge while playing host to the top management staff of the commission.

The Pledge was made in his office in Benin City.

Sir Roland expresses his concern over the unending news of constant abuse and violence against girl-child and women in the country.

He claimed the devious act is often committed by elderly ones against this gender.

He said all hands need to be on deck if great results are expected concerning putting an end to the violent act.

Sir Roland reiterated the need for the government, both at the state and the federal levels, to put an end to act.

“I think the government both at the state and the federal levels are not doing enough to end this violent act against women and girl-child.

“If the government has made death penalty or castration a penalty for the perpetrators, this act would have been a thing of the past,” he said.

The National President of the commission, Sani Momodu, represented by the Assistant Chief Investigation Officer, Edo State Chapter, Gege Weyinu, had earlier said the NHRC cannot do it alone without the help and collaboration of the Media, hence why they visited.

Sir Roland had said the Union under his leadership would do anything possible to help the commission.
