The Deputy Speaker of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has called on Nigerians to elect leaders that will stop ethnic and religious divisions and unite the nation in 2023.

Omo-Agege, whose speech was read by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Yomi Odunuga, said this on Saturday during the eighth annual lecture organised by the Afrikanwatch Network Communications at Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.

He said, “As we are preparing for the election of the post-Buhari era, there is no better time to talk about the kind of leadership Nigeria needs than now. Nigeria seems to be more divided along ethnic and religious lines.

“This is why we need leaders who are committed to a strong, united and corruption-free Nigeria. Nigeria needs selfless leaders who will improve the economy, create jobs, provide adequate security and turn their backs on ethnic and religious divisions.”

The lecture titled, ‘2023: The Kind of Leaders Nigeria Needs, Our Collective Responsibility,’ was also attended by the Governor of Ondo State, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu; and a former Special Adviser on Media to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr Reuben Abati.

Akeredolu, who was represented by the Secretary to the State, Catherine Odu, said, “The kind of leaders we need, particularly in 2023, must be those who have insights and foresight to rekindle the aspirations of our dear country. As followers, we must also show interest in what happens in our country and choose our leaders right.”
