‌Market leaders and traders in Lagos State have been urged to adopt proper waste disposal and ensure that their business environments are clean.

This advise was made on Sunday by Lagos State Government through the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello, while advising them to embrace the waste-to-wealth initiative of the state, whereby pet bottles and Styrofoam are exchanged for money.

Bello was represented by Director of Admin and Human Resource, Mrs Bukola Agunsoye, at an environmental advocacy programme for market leaders and artisans in the Lagos West Senatorial District at Ikotun Igando Local Council Development Area.

His statement read: “Of serious concern to the ministry and the state is the prevalence of packaging waste such as used plastic bottles, pure water nylon and Styrofoam carelessly disposed in our markets and streets, which eventually end up blocking the free flow of water and resulting in flooding,” Bello said in the statement.

According to Bello, over the years, many markets and motor parks across the metropolis were in a sorry state because of the unsanitary attitude of the market occupiers, including mechanics and transport workers.

This development, environmental experts argue, has exposed markets to various outbreaks especially with most of the traders nursing little babies and children.
