Former Empire actor, Jussie Smollett, has been released from jail after spending six days for a hoax hate crime.

The 39-year-old was sentenced to 150 days in jail alongside other fines for lying to Chicago police for a crime he allegedly concocted with the assailants.

He was reported to have raised alarm over a racist and homophobic attack in January 2019. An act that was later confirmed to have stemmed from him as he paid two Nigerian brothers who he met on set to act the assault.

However, on Wednesday, March 16, 2022, the First District Court of Appeals ruled that the actor be released. His legal team had appealed the sentence of Cook County Judge James Linn.

He was seen walking out Cook County jail surrounded by his family and security on Wednesday. He didn’t say a word as he was escorted to an SUV.

Earlier on March 10, during his conviction, Jussie had stated that he is not suicidal and if anything happens to him in jail, he is not responsible for it.

He has been heavily guarded since then in jail and according to reports, he was free to associate with staff, a Television set and the use of telephone.

The Empire star was found guilty on five counts of felony disorderly conduct for lying to police after an eight-day trial stemming from the staged 2019 hate crime. He was acquitted on a sixth charge.
