The Enugu State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) on Wednesday distributed relief materials to 556 flood victims in Nsukka Local Government Area of the state.
The victims lost their valuables, including their buildings, following a massive flood that ravaged Ama-Ogbo, Onu Iyi, Arulo and Ihe-Aro communities.
The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Mrs Nkechi Eneh, said that the gesture was part of efforts by the state government to cushion the effect of the disaster on the victims.
Eneh said that Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi was pained by the trauma they went through.
He said that the governor had directed a team of engineers to visit the area to ascertain the extent of damage and find a lasting solution to the menace.
She described the relief materials as a stop-gap measure, adding that the government would soon invite the victims for discussion.
Eneh said that plans were being made by the government to build roads with standard drainages in the area to further check the phenomenon.
The SEMA boss said that work would begin in the affected areas as soon as the rains subsided.
Also, Chief Uche Ogbu, the Chairman, Infrastructural Needs Assessment Committee, said that the state government had taken stock of the necessary things to do in the affected areas.
Ogbu said that four roads were already under construction in Nsukka, while 14 others would be rehabilitated.
One of the victims, Miss Chioma Onah, from Onu-Iyi, described the flood of Aug. 30 and Aug. 31 in the community as unimaginable.
Onah said that the flood pulled down their fence and kitchen, destroying house furniture and other household items.
She said that their community had been subjected to perennial flooding and appealed for the intervention of the state government and other relevant agencies for a permanent solution.
Onah, who said that several people in the community had been rendered homeless by the flood, thanked the state government for the relief materials.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the materials included bags of rice, beans, garri, beverages, vegetable oil, cement, zinc, nails and foams.
