A former Green Eagles player, Arthur Egbunna, has urged sports coaches in the country to put national interest above their personal gains in the discharge of their duties.

Egbunna made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Awka.

He was reacting to allegations of insincerity by some sports coaches in selecting players.

“Nigeria has not been able to dominate Africa’s sports sector because some coaches accept gratifications from players before including them in the team.

“This practice has led to the inclusion of unfit and incapable players in teams representing the country at sports events.’’

The ex-Green Eagles player said the practice had denied the country outstanding performance in competitions.

“All our national teams, male and female, have this problem of demands for gratification. It is unacceptable,’’ he said.

Egbunna urged sports regulating bodies in the country to take steps towards bringing those indulging in such practice to book.
