Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes combined to rescue a point for Manchester United in their 1-1 draw with Tottenham on Friday night – and the Red Devils might’ve won it if not for VAR.

Pogba, who has not played for almost six months because of an ankle injury that needed surgery, emerged as a second-half substitute and demonstrated he has the creativity to make a difference as United battle for a place in the top four.

Steven Bergwijn put Spurs ahead in the first half, thanks to a David De Gea mistake, only for Fernandes to cancel it out from the penalty spot, 10 minutes from time.

United were awarded a second penalty by referee Jon Moss but the decision was overturned by VAR meaning the two sides, still with hopes of finishing in the top four, had to settle for a point.

Knocked out of the FA Cup and the Champions League prior to the interruption in the campaign, Spurs have now gone seven games without a win.

Mourinho appeared set for the kind of grind-it-out success he built his reputation on. Instead, United’s second-half recovery has handed the advantage to fourth-placed Chelsea, who travel to struggling Aston Villa on Sunday.
