In a bizarre move, the Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Monday, May 24, 2021 as a work-free day for military personnel in the wake and in honour of the fallen Chief of Army and other victims of the recent air crash in Kaduna.

This unprecedented decision was conveyed in an official circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha.

This military ‘public holiday’ is not only unprecedented but also raises questions as to whether wholesale holiday or toll-free day for all is tenable in the field of military duties and security generally.

The Federal Government Chief Scribe stated that President Buhari has also directed that the national flag be flown at half-mast from Monday to Wednesday in all pubic places, official residences, and facilities across the country.

Boss said the directive was to honour the memory of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, and the other military officers who lost their lives in plane crash in Kaduna on Friday, last week.

The remains of the late military officers were laid to rest at the National Military Cemetery, Abuja on Saturday.
