Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri and the Commissioner of Police, Babatola Afolabi, have called for calm, following the recent violent conflict between police officers and military personnel in the state.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening at Target Junction, Yola North Local Government Area, involved an exchange of gunfire that culminated in an attack on a police facility and the military personnel’s killing of an officer identified as Inspector Jacob Daniel.

The army has yet to comment on the circumstances of the conflict.

However, the commissioner, in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, on Wednesday, said an urgent investigation had been mandated to ensure that justice and peace reign.

Responding to the incident, Afolabi warned that any attacks on security officers in the line of duty would no longer be tolerated.

Emphasising the sanctity of all security personnel’s lives, the commissioner assured the public that such conflicts would be rigorously addressed under existing laws.

Afolabi reaffirmed the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property and advocated collaboration with other security agencies to protect the fundamental rights of security operatives, enabling them to fulfil their duty of serving and protecting citizens.

According to the police chief, the top management of both security agencies is diligently working within legal frameworks to address the situation.

Governor Fintiri, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, described the gunshots in Yola as regrettable and urged the residents of Adamawa State to go about their normal activities.

He disclosed that the government was on top of the situation and appealed to the parties to exercise restraint for the overall peace of the state.

The governor urged all security personnel on special assignment to remain at their duty posts and conduct themselves with a high sense of maturity.
