Fire guts illicit oil storage facility in Lagos

An  industrial area in Oregun, Lagos State was on Tuesday morning gutted by fire.

The early intervention of fire fighters at about 11am prevented lost of lives and properties.

Reports has it that illegal storage and handling of diesel at the open land, which has been going on for years at the same location led to the fire outbreak.

In response to the fire outbreak, the Lagos State Fire Service, LRT, Anti Vandal Unit of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC and NSCDC came to the rescue following calls from individuals.

Following the incident, it was discovered that seven plastic storage containers, 25 drums, three storage tankers, one articulated tanker, and six buses used for the purpose of illegal storage and conveyance of diesel were uncovered on the premises.

The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the premises have been sealed and handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to carry out further investigation.

He further stated that, “While the situation has been brought under control, residents are reminded of the need to take responsibility with respect to life and properties and report such instances to the authorities,”
