Former Military Governor of old Rivers State, Brigadier-General Anthony Ukpo, has died.
Ukpo passed away in Asi Ukpo Calabar Hospital in the early hours of Monday 6, September 2021.
He had only been briefly ill.
Born July 16, 1947, he served in various command and staff positions both in the Nigerian Armed Forces and the United Nations Forces Operations in Lebanon.
The late Brigadier General was Minister of Information and Culture, and later Governor of Rivers State, from August 1986 until July 1988 under the General Ibrahim Babangida administration.
An indigene of Cross River State, he attended Military courses in the United Kingdom, United States of America, Israel, and Lebanon.
In 1989, Ukpo was appointed Principal Staff Officer (Civilian equivalent of Chief of Staff) to Babangida.
He retired from the Nigerian Army in 1993.
Ukpo had another opportunity to serve Nigeria when he was appointed member of the Programme Implementation and Monitoring Committee (PIMCO) of the General Abdulsalami Abubakar’s Government in 1998.
He was an industrialist with varied interest in Manufacturing, Property Development, Oil and Gas, Hotel Development, Farming, and most recently Medical diagnosis.
