Gas masks have been deployed inside US Capitol halls and supplied to VP Mike Pence and other Congress members as teargas is fired in the cannon building to disperse protesters.

Pro-Trump supporters had invaded the building, waving flags and clashing violently with security.

Injured police officers were also seen and violent tussles as they stormed the building.

In a bid to disperse the protesters, teargas is being fired as Vice-President Mike Pence was ushered out of the Senate and taken to a secure location. The Senate doors were closed and locked, and senators told to stay away from the doors and then evacuated.

However, the mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Bowser, has ordered a curfew in America’s capital city from 6pm local time to 6am on Thursday in order to halt the violence.

Pence was presiding over the Congress to confirm Joe Biden’s victory before the protesters invaded the bidding to force the suspension of the sitting.
