Illegal Operations: DPR shuts down 86 gas plants in Lago

About 86 Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) plants in Lagos have been sealed by the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) for illegal operations.

The information was made public in a statement issued by the head of Public Affairs of DPR, Mr Paul Osu, on Wednesday in Lagos.

Recall that the state had over the period in review recorded series of explosions at gas stations with loss of lives and properties.

According to the statement from Osu, LPG (cooking gas) plants were shut down for non-compliance with international safety standards.

He further said the plants were also operating without prerequisite approval or licence from the regulatory agency.

Osu observed that some of the sealed plants were operating under high tension electrical installations and other unapproved locations while noting that the move was aimed at reducing the occurrence of gas explosions and fire incidents in Lagos State.

Osu said the DPR would continue to clamp down on such illegal plants while at the same time sensitising the public on the need for safe usage and distribution of gas.

Reports say the state and DPR are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring a reduction of explosion cases.

This, according to them, will be better nipped in the bud through the shutting down of gas stations operating illegally in the state.

One of the measures adopted by the state according to reports is a ban on the location of gas plants in residential areas.
