President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the Senate, urging it to confirm the reappointment of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The President through a letter read on the floor during Tuesday plenary by Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, asked the Red Chamber to expeditiously consider his request for another five-year tenure for Yakubu.

President Buhari had made his intention to extend Yakubu’s tenure on October 27, in a statement by his Spokesman, Femi Adesina.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu’s first tenure has expired Monday, November 9th and he handed over the chairmanship of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to Air Vice Marshal Ahmed Mu’azu (Rtd), a national commissioner of the electoral body from the Northeast.

Mu’azu is in charge of the electoral logistics committee of the commission.

Yakubu was first appointed by President Buhari in October 2015 and assumed office on November 9, 2015, where he has been overseeing the activities of the commission.
