The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has entered into a strategic partnership with global financial technology giant Mastercard to enhance data privacy and protection in the country.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed during a high-level workshop in Abuja, is aimed at deepening compliance with data protection regulations and promoting a stronger culture of digital security among Nigerians.
As part of the partnership, NDPC announced plans to train 5,000 Nigerians to become certified data protection professionals. This initiative seeks to bridge the growing skills gap in the sector, create employment opportunities, and empower youth with relevant digital knowledge.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Chief Privacy Officer for AI and Data Responsibility at Mastercard, Derek O., expressed the company’s commitment to fostering international collaboration in data governance.
“We believe that a secure digital economy depends on collective strength. Sharing global best practices and building capacity together with Nigeria is crucial in protecting privacy and promoting responsible data use,” Derek noted.
The National Commissioner and CEO of NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, described the partnership as a “symbolic and impactful” collaboration. He emphasized the importance of human capital development and highlighted the role of Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) in ensuring digital integrity.
“Our ecosystem is still developing. This partnership with Mastercard will help us build the necessary capacity to uphold strong data governance practices,” Dr. Olatunji stated.
He added that Data Protection Officers (DPOs) are vital players in monitoring organizational compliance, and training them is essential to building a trustworthy digital landscape in Nigeria.
The NDPC-Mastercard partnership underscores the value of international cooperation in shaping a secure, inclusive, and innovation-driven digital future for Nigeria.
