The Nigeria Police Force is advancing its international security collaborations as the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, received UK Home Office Minister Lord David Hansen at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. The high-level meeting focused on combating transnational crime and enhancing joint efforts against cybercrime, marking a significant step toward formalizing Nigeria-UK law enforcement cooperation.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to strengthening inter-agency and international cooperation in combating transnational crime.
This was made known during a courtesy visit to the Force Headquarters in Abuja by the Honourable Lord David Hansen, Minister at the United Kingdom’s Home Office. The visit, which underscored the growing partnership between both nations, focused on tackling major criminal threats, particularly fraud and cybercrime.
Speaking at the meeting, Lord Hansen described transnational crime as a significant concern for both the UK and Nigeria. He lauded the existing collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the UK Government in fighting cybercriminals and expressed optimism for more robust engagements going forward.
“The UK government is proud of our joint efforts with Nigeria in addressing cybercrime. We look forward to formalizing this collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding that will serve as a framework for deeper cooperation,” Hansen stated.
In his remarks, IGP Egbetokun emphasized the strategic importance of the partnership and expressed gratitude for the UK’s continued support to Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies. He highlighted plans to establish a fellowship and exchange program with the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), aimed at enhancing operational capacity and building long-term institutional collaboration.
“The visit not only signifies strong diplomatic ties but also reflects our mutual commitment to securing our nations from the growing threat of cross-border crimes. We look forward to future engagements that will deepen our cooperation,” Egbetokun said.
The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing on the need for sustained efforts in training, intelligence sharing, and technological support to effectively confront emerging global security challenges.
