LG chairman-elect dies as Kano orders civil servants to stay at home

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and newly elected chairman of Bebeji local government council of Kano state, Ali Namadi, has died on Tuesday.

A spokesman of an APC committee in Bebeji local government area, Ibrahim Adamu Tiga, said the chairman died at 1 a.m on Tuesday aged 57, and has been buried in his Bebeji residence, according to Islamic rites.

Tiga said the deceased, who was to receive his Certificate of Return from the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) on Tuesday, drove himself to a hospital in the local government area for medical after winning the Saturday poll, died of suspected high blood pressure.

Namadi and 43 other candidates fielded by the ruling APC won all the 44 chairmanship seats in Kano at the council poll held on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government on Tuesday directed all civil servants in the state to stay at home pending further directive in an attempt to stem the rise in the number of COVID-19 cases.

According to a statement issued and signed by the Commissioner for Information, Comrade Muhammad Garba on Tuesday, the measure was part of the decision adopted at a stakeholders meeting held at the Africa House, Kano on Monday.

It also imposed a fresh ban on the activities of viewing and event centres across the 44 local government areas of the state following the increasing number of COVID-19 cases recently.

Also, in the statement, Garba disclosed that workers on essential services such as the healthcare service providers, fire service, water board, teaching staff, security guards and the media are exempted from the directive.

Furthermore, the Commissioner reaffirmed government’s commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders which include the Ulama to ensure compliance with the COVID-19 preventive protocols.

He warned that security agents who were part of the stakeholders meeting would not hesitate to take stern measures to ensure compliance with the directive.
