A 29-year-old man, Ibeabuchi Chineye, was on Thursday brought before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun for allegedly defrauding a man of N204,000.

Chineye, who resides at No.16 United Peoples Estate, Ijoko, Ota, is facing a three-count charge of fraud, conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Abdulkareem Mustapha, told the court that the defendant and others still at large committed the offences on June 16 at about 12.30 p.m. at Sango-Ota garage.

Mustapha said that the defendant and his accomplices conspired to collect 17 bags of rice valued at N204,000 under pretense from the complainant, Kalu Ikenna.

“The defendant converted the money to personal use instead of fulfilling the agreement between them,” he said.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 390 (9), 419 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Mathew Akinyemi, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Akinyemi ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government.

The case was adjourned until July 7 for further hearing.
