Mauritania becomes coronavirus free, without active case

Authorities in Mauritania say the country may have defeated the coronavirus with no active case as at Tuesday.

Of the seven confirmed cases, six tested negative while one succumbed to the disease.

Mauritania is one of the few African countries that have so far recorded single digit infection along with the likes of Burundi, Sao Tome and Principe, South Sudan with five, four and four cases respectively as of April 21.

The continent’s sixth largest soverign nation said it continued to carry out tests since March 13 when the index case was recorded.

The country is currently enforcing a nigh-time curfew as part of containment efforts.

The coronavirus pandemic has been confirmed in over 180 countries globally since it was first discovered in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late December 2019.

All except two African countries, Comoros and Lesotho have recorded cases as governments roll out measures to combat the spread.

There have been over 23,000 confirmed cases on the continent with 1,160 deaths.

Egypt is the continent’s epicentre with 3,333 cases followed by South Africa (3,300) and Algeria (3042).
