The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has backed the Southern Governors’ position to ban open grazing.

National Patron, Senator Walid Jibrin, made this known in a media briefing on Thursday in Kaduna.

According to him, this will address the farmers-herders crisis in the country.

He said that cattle rearing has been in Africa for over 100 years without any consideration to free movement of cattle (Open Grazing) or any Grazing Reserve.

He further noted that, this was carried out because at that time there were few herders, farmers and cattle, especially in Nigeria, stressing that currently, the population has increased with modern technique of farming consuming land tremendously.

Senator Jibrin, who is also the Sarkin Fulani Nasarawa, said, with the current concern on cattle rearing in Africa especially Nigeria, there is a need to look at how best this practice will be carried out successfully.

Recall that the Southern Governors’ Forum had last week unanimously agreed to ban open grazing in the region.

However, this resolution has attracted mixed reactions with the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami describing it as “unconstitutional”.

However, in reaction, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ekiti State, who is head of the forum, insisted that the decision is final and advised Malami to go to court.
