Afrobeat singer, Rema, has become the first ever Afrobeat star to win an MTV VMAs award, beating his colleagues, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido amongst others.
The first ever category was announced months ago by the organisers of the Video Music Award show.
Rema’s song ‘Calm Down’ remix featured American artiste, Selena Gomez.
Receiving the award, Rema had stepped out in a leather emblem with Selena in a red gown by his side.
He had thanked God for the award and he went on to thank every notable artiste of Afrobeat starting from Fela Anikulapo. He mentioned the likes of Tuface, Timaya, Don Jazzy, Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido and others.
Rema beat other Afrobeat singers in the category. The list includes Burna Boy, Wizkid featuring Ayra Starr, Davido etc.
The song since its remix has broken so many records like being on the Top 10 of the Hot 100 Billboard chart for weeks.
