The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Monday announced 575 new cases of COVID-19 in the country, bringing the total number to 29,286.

The NCDC made the announcement on Monday night via its verified Twitter handle.

“The 575 new cases are reported from 20 states- Lagos(123), FCT(100), Delta(58), Edo(52), Ogun(42), Katsina(24), Bayelsa(23), Rivers(22), Borno(19), Plateau(18), Ondo(18), Oyo(17), Kwara(15), Osun(13), Enugu(9), Nasarawa (7), Abia (6), Cross River(5), Kaduna(3), Ekiti(1).

“On the 6th of July 2020, 575 new confirmed cases and 9 deaths were recorded in Nigeria,” the NCDC said.

There was an increase in the number of confirmed cases reported Monday compared to 544 cases reported on Sunday.

NCDC officially recorded the confirmed cases reported in Cross River, after days of controversies on the cases.

KAFTAN Post reports that the chief medical director of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) had announced that five patients tested positive for COVID-19 in the health facility.

In their response, the state government accused him of spreading falsehood. The state governor, Ben Ayade, had repeatedly said efforts made by his administration has prevented a COVID-19 outbreak in the state.

However, members of the Nigerian Medical Association, Cross River State branch, eventually embarked on an indefinite strike over non-cooperation of the state government and alleged failure of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to reflect the five COVID-19 confirmed cases in the state in its daily situation report since July 1, 2020.

The five cases eventually reflected in the record of confirmed cases that was made public by NCDC on Monday night.

According to NCDC, “1 new state has reported a case in the last 24 hours. Till date, 29,286 cases have been confirmed, 11828 cases have been discharged and 654 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory”.

As of the time of reporting, all 36 states and the FCT have recorded at least a case of the disease.

Since the index case was recorded in the country in February, NCDC said, 152,952 samples have been tested.

A breakdown of the 29,286 confirmed cases is presented in the tabular format below:

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, has called on striking doctors in Cross River State to suspend their indefinite strike.

Ehanire made the call on Monday during the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 briefing in Abuja, revealing that a delegation had been sent to Cross State to address the problem.

According to the health minister, “A strong 17-man team of the Federal Ministry of Health, led by the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Development Agency, left Abuja for Calabar this morning to engage with the Cross River State government in setting up their COVID-19 response and align it with the national response.

“Agencies and many departments of the Ministry of Health, like NCDC, hospital services, family health, are represented in the delegation, to ensure the appropriate technical handshake between Federal and state service delivery pillars.

“And also ensure that the disruption of routine medical services, which has been observed in many states, is minimized or eliminated in the state.

“We have also called on the Cross River State NMA to suspend their strike action and receive the ministry’s delegation.

“At the request of the governor of the state, a senior immigration officer is on board to study the border challenges with Cameroon, as well as a port health officer to assess risks posed by sea travelers arriving Cross River State ports particularly from neighboring Central African countries of Congo, Gabon, Cameroon, Angola etc.”
