The Niger State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has distanced itself from the actions of the chairman of Suleja Local Government Area, Abdullahi Maje.
Mr Maje reportedly stormed the National Headquarters of ALGON in Abuja, on Tuesday, and declared himself interim president.
In a statement signed by Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Local Government Affairs, Gambo Tanko Kagara, on Wednesday, the Niger State LG chairmen condemned Maje’s actions, describing it as “barbaric” and “unlawful”.
According to the statement, the Suleja LG chairman isn’t qualified for the position as he is not the state’s chairman.
While apologising for his conduct, the Niger State ALGON also urged the public to disregard Maje, who will eventually be called to account for his “dishonourable and unwholesome” conduct.
Recall that Maje had declared himself chairman, inaugurating a seven-member Interim Management Committee (IMC) to pilot the affairs of the association for the next six months.
Other members of the IMC are: Ige Emmanuel- Deputy President from South West; Kingsley Innaji (South-East); Philip Okparaji (South-South); Jingi Rufai (North-East); Shehu Jaga (North-West) and Niyi Adeagbo as Public Relations Officer.
In his inaugural speech, Mr Maje said the committee’s mandate was to set up an ALGON Electoral Committee to conduct elections into the offices of president and National Executive Council.
He sought the cooperation of the association’s permanent members and stakeholders to support the committee to reposition the association.
“I want to assure every member and stakeholders that we shall henceforth run ALGON in accordance with our Constitution and the Rules of Law,” he said.
