Nigerian arts genius, Prof Yusuf Adebayo Grillo, dies

One of the Nigeria’s leading artists, Yusuf Grillo, has died.

The art ginus, who passed on in the early hours of today, Monday has been buried in Lagos.

He was born in 1934 and died at age 87.

One of his children, Mrs Adeyemi, confirmed Grillo’s passing to newsmen.

She said “Yes, my father is dead. He died this morning.”

The late Grillo, a contemporary of Bruce Onobrakpeya, was a Zaria Art Society comrade.

His works are known for the use of colour blue and natural settings.

Grillo attended Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology, Zaria; Cambridge University; and also schooled in Germany and the United States of America.

He is a former Head of the Department of Art and Printing at Yaba College of Technology.

A master of his craft, some of his iconic works include the stain glass drawings in churches such as Dominic Catholic Church and All Saints Anglican Church, Yaba.

He engraved his marks deeply on the academic scene serving as the Head of the Department of Fine Arts, Yaba College of Technology for about 25 years; thus becoming very influentially in grooming many art masters from Nigeria.

Grillo’s works are deeply influenced by the characteristics of traditional Yoruba philosophy and sculpture.
