Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala have been crowned African Player of the Year for both male and female categories respectively.

While Osimhen defeated Mohamed Salah and Achraf Hakimi to break the 24-year-old jinx, Oshoala won it for the record sixth time.

The Prince of Napoli is the first Nigerian to win the award since Nwankwo Kanu Kanu claimed the prestigious gong in 1999.

He spearheaded the Italian team’s unprecedented Serie A title run, scoring 26 goals in the league to become the first African to win the Pichichi (top scorer) award. His contribution broke George Weah’s record as the highest-scoring player from the continent in the Italian top flight.

Also, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Nigeria’s goalkeeper scooped the African goalkeeper award in the women’s category, capping a wonderful performance for Nigeria.
