Oyo State has recorded its second coronavirus death, raising questions over Governor Seyi Makinde’s decision to reopen the state’s secretariat.

Governor Makinde said in a tweet on Monday that the patient, who was one of the new cases announced on Sunday, died on Monday morning.

“Sadly, one of the new COVID-19 cases announced yesterday, passed away this morning. This brings the number of COVID-19 related deaths in the state to two. So, there are currently eight active cases in Oyo State,” he wrote.

This comes on the same day the secretariat was opened for workers from level 13 upward to resume work.

Mr Makinde, in a statement on Friday,  also relaxed the curfew from 7:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m. and to 7:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m. in a bid to accommodate farmers this planting season.

He said: “The state secretariat will be reopened on Monday, April 27th, 2020. Only civil servants at level 13 and above with separate offices will resume.”

“The following guidelines are in place to prevent and control the spread of COVID-19 within the secretariat:

“There will be new security measures in place including having only one gate to serve as entrance and exit. All other gates will be closed.”

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced three new coronavirus cases in Oyo on Sunday night.

The cases were among 91 across the country.
