A Nigerian Police officer was seen in a viral video carrying a female VIP’s food tray at an event in Ilorin, Kwara State, and this had generated reactions from Nigerians who saw the act as an abuse of power.

The police officer, who has been identified, has been asked to report to the police headquarters.

On Wednesday, the Force Headquarters said the video will be probed.

According to the Force, several warnings have been issued to officers assigned to Very Important Persons to stop serving purposes aside from the protection assignments they were ordered to do.

The Acting Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, told newsmen that the officer has been summoned to Abuja for questioning.

He said, “He (the policeman) has been identified. He is coming to Abuja to meet us. We’ll ask question from him and take necessary action.

“We need to discourage such a thing because it is embarrassing the image of the Force and we can’t continue to be experiencing that kind of a thing because it is highly unprofessional.”

The woman pictured with the officer, former Nigeria’s ambassador to the Republic of Netherland, Dr Nimota Nihinlola Akanbi, who is now the chairman of the Governing Board of National Secondary School Education, has reacted to the news.

According to her, the food is for the officer, however she is yet to react to the blue purse found under the food tray.

“The truth is that I allowed him (police orderly) to pick his food. I am a teacher and disciplinarian”.

She went further to say this might be the handiwork of her detractors, adding that she is aware of the importance of security operatives and demeaning them is never her nature.
