Nigeria’s Latifat Tijani has won the country’s first gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

She won the gold on Thursday in women’s 45kg powerlifting.

Tijani clinched gold with her 107kg lift to beat China’s Zhe Cui to second place.

Zhe lifted 102kg to win silver, her country’s second powerlifting medal of the day.

Poland’s Justyna Kordzryk claimed the bronze medal with her 101kg lift.

Tijani was clearly ahead of her competitors so much that even her second best lift would have won gold.

She successfully lifted 105kg before going ever higher with the golden attempt at 107kg.

Nigeria will continue the hunt for more powerlifting medals on Thursday.

The event has consistently been a goldmine for the country at the Paralympics over the years.
