A High Court in Lagos has awarded singer Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman also known as Oxlade with a N5million damages over his involvement in the release of a sex tape.
The singer had been caught in a leaked sex tape on Snapchat in February 2022.
The woman, John Blessing, in the video had blasted the singer a few days after the leak stating that the video was released without her consent.
This had forced Oxlade to make a public apology to the lady stating that he had no idea how the video had leaked.
Blessing had filed a suit before the court on March 15, 2022, with a N20million damages and a declaration that the singer’s act without her knowledge and consent amounted to flagrant contravention of enabling laws a d a gross violation of her fundamental rights to dignity, privacy and freedom from discrimination guranteed under Sections 34 and 37 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended); and Articles 5 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (Ratification and Enforcement), Act, CAP A9, LFN, 2004.
In a judgement dated January 24, 2023, Justice Olalekan Oresanya described the act as a “distasteful and classless” act.
After hearing counsel for the claimant, E. T. Idemudia and O. S. Mabekoje with U. R. Michael for the respondent, the judge had set for judgment when parties agreed to opt for amicable resolution via a consent judgement.
However, Justice Oresanya chastised Oxlade for treating the judicial process with disrespect and also accused his lawyer of aiding him to desecrate the court.
The judge equally warned the singer over such acts in the future.
By the consent judgement, Oxlade is to pay damages to the tune of N5million to the claimant in two installments of N2million and N3million respectively.
The judgement precludes Blessing perpetually from initiating any further legal process or any process in respect of the facts and matters giving rise to the suit.
It also forbids her from discussing the issues with any third party.
