South African rapper, AKA, shot dead by unknown gunmen

South African rapper, Kiernon Jarryd Forbes also known as AKA, on Friday, February 10, was shot dead in a drive-by shooting on Florida Road, Durban.

The shooting has been confirmed by several police officers.

According to reports, AKA was shot alongside his bodyguard and his best friend. The shooting took place around 10pm as the rapper and other victims were standing outside a restaurant called Wish.

The gunmen in two unknown cars opened fire on the rapper.

Two persons have been confirmed dead, the rapper who was described as a “famous rapper” and a close friend identified as Tebello Motsoane.

His family in a statement said, “It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son, and confirm his untimely and tragic passing on the evening of 10 February 2023. We are awaiting further details from the Durban police.

“To us, Kieran Jarryd Forbes was a son, brother , grandson, nephew, cousin and friend and most importantly father to his beloved daughter Kaito. To many he was AKA, SUPERMEGA, BHOVA and the many other names of affection his legion of fans called him by.

“Our son was loved and he gave love in return. In this time of grief, we appeal for your compassion, space and time to congregate as a family to decide on the upcoming days.

“We thank you for the love and support we have received thus far and ask you to continue to keep us in your prayers and uplifted in the Lord.”

A spokesperson for ALS Paramedics, Garrith Jamieson, said the Florida Road where the incident occurred has been closed off.

He was set to perform at a Durban night club, YUGO, for his birthday celebrations.

The Cape Town born rapper made his debut with his single ‘Victory Lap’ from his album ‘Alter Ego’ and was referred to as the finest rapper in South Africa.
