Spain has emerged winner of the women World Cup after defeating England 1-0 in the final played on Sunday.
Twenty ninth minute goal by Carmona was all that decided the match in favour of La Roja and all efforts to equalize by England proved abortive.
That Spain had progressed to the final, given the tumultuous year the national team had experienced, was remarkable.
Also that La Roja triumphed against the reigning European champion and pre-match favorite in spite of the disputes and divisions which has clouded the national team throughout the tournament makes this achievement extraordinary.
