Gary Rowett has been sacked by Championship side Stoke City after less than eight months in charge.

Rowett, 44, was appointed in May following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

The Potters were one of the pre-season favourites to win promotion, but they are 14th in the second tier, having won just eight of their 26 league fixtures.

Ex-Stoke midfielder Rory Delap, one of Rowett’s coaching staff, will help take temporary charge of the first team.

A club statement said Stoke hope to make an appointment “as swiftly as possible” to replace Rowett.

Rowett, who left Championship rivals Derby County in the summer, had described morning speculation over his futures as “noise” after seeing his side have to come from behind to take Saturday’s FA Cup third-round tie with League One Shrewsbury Town to a replay.

There has been increasing pressure on the former Birmingham City boss, with fans displaying a “Rowett out” banner during their 2-0 home defeat against Bristol City on 1 January.

Former Manchester United and Everton manager David Moyes was last week linked with the Stoke job.
