Super Eagles’ Simon to battle Salah, Mane, others for top CAF awards

SUPER Eagles winger, Moses Simon, is among a long list of 30 players from 13 countries for the Confederation of African Football’s Men’s Player of the Year prize.
The nominees were unveiled today, with the award ceremony set for July 21 in Morocco, two days before the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in the North African country.
Aside from the Nigerian, other stars nominated for the biggest prize of the CAF Awards are Egypt and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, Senegal and Bayern Munich attacker Sadio Mane, and Algeria and Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez.
Senegal and Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, his compatriot Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly as well as Morocco and Paris Saint-Germain defender Ashraf Hakimi are also nominated.
In the coaching category, 10 men are nominated, including Aliou Cisse, who led Senegal to their first-ever AFCON title in February, three-time CAF Champions League winner Pitso Mosimane from South Africa and Portuguese-Mozambican Carlos Quieroz.
Senegal, Egypt, Burkina Faso and Cameroon are among the 10 nominees for Men’s National Team of the Year, while South Africa and Al Ahly forward Percy Tau is vying for the Inter-Club Men’s Player of the Year prize with 19 others.
Nigeria and FC Copenhagen forward Akinkunmi Amoo and Tunisia and Manchester United midfielder Hannibal Mejbri are among 10 players shortlisted for the Young Player of the Year award.
CAF will announce the women’s nominees later.
CAF explained that a stakeholder panel made up of technical experts, African legends and journalists decided on the list for the various categories taking into the consideration the performance of the nominee from September 2021 till June 2022 at all levels.
The winners of each category will be decided by a voting panel made up of CAF Technical Committee, media professionals, head coaches and captains of national teams and clubs involved at the group stage of the Interclub competitions.
