Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has retained his title after a third-round knockout win over challenger, Gilbert Burns, in Las Vegas on Sunday.
The ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ notched up his third title defence in devastating style to add to his previous wins over Colby Covington and Jorge Masvidal in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
With the win, Usman has taken his impressive UFC record to 13-0, while he ended Burns’ six-match win streak.
Burns started the mixed martial arts bout aggressively, landing powerful shots and put Usman under pressure and in defensive mode.
However, the champion was patient, and the finish came just 34 seconds into the third round, when Usman dropped Burns with a straight right hand.
The Nigerian followed up with several damaging shots to the face and body, leaving the challenger bloodied as the referee called the fight in his favour.
Usman’s13 straight victories is now the longest winning streak in the welterweight division history.
After the bout, 33-year-old Usman reminded everyone of his fight intelligence while giving props to his former training partner who he just defeated.
“Respect to Gilbert, he’s done a great job in this sport,” Usman said in his pre-fight interview.
“But this is the varsity. My fight IQ is on another level.”
The Nigerian Nightmare then offered to fight Jorge Masvidal again.
Usman defeated Masvidal in their first bout in July 2020 and says he is ready to beat him up again.
“We got this little street thug call himself Jesus, thinking he’s Jesus,” Usman said of Masdival.
“They tried to make that fight but he kept backing out. The only reason this man took the fight is because it was on six days notice and he had a built in excuse. And he’s still running his mouth talking.
“I’ll give you a whole training camp. I guarantee you won’t sign on that dotted line. I’ll finish your a**. Step in here and see me.”
