British Prime Minsiter, Boris Johnson and girlfriend, Carrie Symonds have welcomed the arrival of a baby boy — weeks after beating the COVID-19.

The couple’s spokesperson, who broke the good news in a statement, said the baby was delivered in a London hospital on Wednesday morning.

“The Prime Minister and Ms Symonds are thrilled to announce the birth of a healthy baby boy at a London hospital earlier this morning. Both mother and baby are doing very well. The PM and Ms Symonds would like to thank the fantastic NHS maternity team,” the statement read.

Several British political figures including, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak and ex-Prime Minister David Cameron, have taken to social media platforms to congratulate the couple.

“Great to hear Downing Street is getting a new resident. Congratulations to @BorisJohnson and @carriesymonds on the birth of their son,” Sunak wrote.

On his part, Caneron said : “Heartfelt congratulations @BorisJohnson and @carriesymonds on your wonderful news today. Sam and I are thrilled for you both! Sorry we didn’t leave the cot – but the climbing frame should still be in the garden!.”

The arrival of their new baby comes about two weeks after Johnson — who had contracted COVID-19 was discharged from the hospital after undergoing treatment.

Mr Johnson had only returned to work 48 hours before the birth of his son, having been convalescing at his country residence Chequers for two weeks following his discharge from hospital.

Three weeks ago, doctors and nurses at St Thomas’ Hospital in central London had seen the Prime Minister through a three-night stint in intensive care as they treated him for his coronavirus symptoms.

He later admitted his illness “could have gone either way” and individually name-checked staff who had watched over him through the night.

Symonds, although, didn’t test positive,  showed coronavirus symptoms.

The 32-year-old former government adviser fell into the group of vulnerable people urged to avoid contact with those who have symptoms of Covid-19.

Boris Johnson has become only the fourth Prime Minister in 170 years to have a child born during their premiership.

With the arrival of a “healthy baby boy at a London hospital earlier this morning”, Mr Johnson joins Cameron, Tony Blair, and 150 years before, Lord John Russell, in becoming new fathers while in office.
