The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) has announced five cases of coronavirus in Cross River State.

In an internal memo signed by Chief Medical Director, Ikpeme Ikpeme, on Friday, UCTH said five samples returned positive, two of which are medical staff.

Cross River is the only state in the country without a confirmed case according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The health agency, though, had severely warned that no state is free from the contagion, urging governments to turn in more samples for testing.

According to Ikpeme, the cases were tested at the Alex Ekwueme University Teaching Hospital, Abakili using PCR Technique.

While advising both patients and staff to keep proper hygiene, the MCD, however, assured the coronavirus isn’t a “death sentence”.

Recall that the UCH management had recently raised an alarm that the state isn’t COVID-19 free as being portrayed by the state government.

“With recent developments, it does appear that the state may not be free of Covid-19 as generally believed. A recent rapid test carried on a patient came out positive” Prof. Ikpeme said in a circular addressed to the hospital management, staff and patients,” read the circular dated June 25, 2020.

Last week, the lawmaker representing Obudu constituency at the Cross River house of assembly, Godwin Akwaji, died at UCTH after showing symptoms of COVID-19.
