President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday ordered the suspension of the managing director of Nigeria Ports Authority, Hadiza Usman.

A statement by presidential spokesman Garba Shehu said the president approved recommendation by the ministry of transportation to probe Usman’s leadership.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the recommendation of the Ministry of Transportation under Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi for the setting up of an Administrative Panel of Inquiry to investigate the Management of the Nigerian Ports Authority,” Mr Garba said in the statement.

“The President has also approved that the Managing Director, Hadiza Bala Usman, step aside while the investigation is carried out. Mr Mohammed Koko will act in that position.

“The panel is to be headed by the Director, Maritime Services of the Ministry while the Deputy Director, Legal of the same ministry will serve as Secretary.

“Other members of the panel will be appointed by the minister.”

Sources from the NPA are of the opinion that Usman’s suspension could be in connection with her alleged long-running battle with Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi.

The suspended MD is an ally of Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State who she worked with during his stint as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and our sources added that she still takes orders from her former boss.

However, another report says her problem began in February after her criticism of insecurity situation in the country.

Usman, had in February, lamented over the kidnap of students in Zamfara and Katsina States.

“The state of insecurity in the country that has led to the kidnap of Kagara boys and Zamfara girls need to be addressed URGENTLY,” she tweeted.

“We can’t go on like this! Rescue our children and secure our country that’s all we ask”.

A former Director Finance and Administration, Mohammed Bello-Koko, takes over over from Usman.
