Nigeria’s Ese Brume made history on the final day of the 2022 World Championships in Oregon when she won Silver with a Season’s Best (SB) of 7.02m in the final of her event, making her the first African (male or female) to win two medals in the long jump at the World Championships.

Malaika Mihambo of Germany, the defending champion, countered with a further leap of 7.09m, good for GOLD, with Brume claiming the Silver and Leticia Oro Melo of Brazil winning the Bronze with 6.89m.

She is now one of just three Nigerians with two medals from the World Championships. Francis Obikwelu first took home a silver medal in the men’s 4x100m in 1997, then a bronze medal in the 200m in 1999.

In the 200-meter race and the long jump, respectively, Okagbare won silver and bronze in Moscow in 2013, while Brume triumphed in bronze and silver in 2019 and 2022.

She is also the only sportsperson—male or female—to have captured three consecutive Long Jump championships at the African Championships.
