Nollywood actress, Aisha Lawal, has stated that the Nollywood industry is owned by the Yoruba tribe.

She made the declaration in an interview with Tribune. She said the Yorubas started the movie industry.

Aisha had said this to shut critics up for saying Yoruba movie stars are playing catch up in the industry.

She denied that. She told the interviewer to make research to back her claims up.

Aisha said, “We own the industry. Go back to research. The industry belongs to the Yoruba people. If you go back to research, you will hear from people like Hubert Ogunde and Ade Love. I don’t want to go into details.

“But, if you go and research very well, you will discover that Yorubas own this industry, we started this industry. We messed up at some point, but we are not playing catch-up.

“We are there already. Now, everybody wants to shoot a Yoruba movie.”

In response to that, her colleague from the East tribe, Mary Remmy Njoku, mocked the actress. She said people had been pronouncing the movie industry wrongly because it should be called ‘Yollywood’ since the Yorubas own it.

She wrote, “I think she is right, that’s why it’s called Yollywood. Nigerians don’t know how to pronounce it. And every Nigerian filmmaker was granted Yorobian citizenship to be part of the Industry.”
