The Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle has denied reports that he ordered the arrest of two chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Matawalle urged the PDP to verify from the police why members of the party were arrested as he had no hand in it.

The governor, who made this claim on Sunday, shortly after the PDP had alleged a rising situation of political persecution within the state, said he is neither a policeman nor a military officer and as such, he has no power to arrest any individual.

He said, “Am I a policeman, soldier or civil defense officer? I am not, I am a governor, I cannot arrest anybody, if anyone is arrested then it means that they have done something against the law, so they should go to police or wherever their people are arrested and ask them, not the governor, I am not the Commissioner of Police”.

He further urged politicians to ensure they carry out their election campaigns in line with laws of the state and the nation.

In his words, “We have already made all the necessary arrangements that will get all we need to make sure that this election will be done according to the law and in a peaceful atmosphere”.

The governor further expressed optimism that he will win his re-election for a second term in office as Zamfara State Governor considering the massive support he has so far received from well-meaning citizens of the state.
