Former Presidential spokesperson, Dr Doyin Okupe, on Tuesday, declared his intention to contest the 2023 presidential election.

He said he would run on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He stated this in a statement titled, ‘2023: Doyin Okupe promises a government that prioritises the needs of the poor as he officially declares
presidential ambition,’ issued by his media office.

It quoted Okupe saying, “I believe I have the knowledge, the requisite national political experience and intellectual capacity and wisdom to halt the social and economic decadence, insecurity and pervasive poverty that have nearly made life meaningless in Nigeria.

“I want to run a government which for the first time will make the life, wellbeing and safety of lives and properties, especially of the poor and needy a major priority.”

He also promised that, if given the mandate, he would radically change the budgeting process to make it people-oriented “rather than the fraudulent budgets we have run year in year out for the last 60 odd years.”

The aspirant promised that 30 per cent of the national budget from 2023 under his administration would be devoted towards the social welfare of the Nigerian people.

Okupe said, “The wealth of the nation will be enjoyed by the nationals not multinationals, foreign contractors and elites in the country.”

The former presidential spokesperson announced a social contract which he captioned “My covenant with God and Nigerians”.

He also pledged to “increase electricity generation to 30,000 megawatts in three years.”
