Presidential aspirant, Prince Adewole Adebayo, says he is proudly aligned with the Social Democratic Party (SDP) because it is the party of his youth.

Describing the SDP as a “salvation boat”, the renowned legal practitioner said the party is offering quality with the calibre of Nigerians in its fold

Adebayo, who spoke at the party’s National Executive Council meeting, made this public through his official Twitter handle on Wednesday.

As part of a democracy project meant to form two detribalised political parties, former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, created the SDP alongside the National Republican Convention in 1990.

During the Third Republic, the party was considered attractive to young radical intellectuals and socialists.

However, the party has fallen behind the People’s Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress since the return of democracy in 1999.

Taking a trip down memory lane, Adebayo recalled his role in the emergence of the late MKO Abiola as the winner of the ill-fated 1993 presidential election.

As a young activist, Adebayo said the SDP was the horse that took Nigeria out of a dictatorship.

“I remember when we used to run around in Lagos for MKO Abiola. We were young activists pasting posters, doing seminars,” he said in a short video posted alongside his tweet.

“I remember the joy of the victory. I was at the residence of the late Lateef Jakande when the results came. We know the significance of SDP in the history of this country.

“When Nigerians were tired of military rule in 1993, SDP was the horse that took us out of dictatorship.

“Today we have June 12 as Democracy Day because of SDP. This party knows how to offer quality. Because what Nigeria needs now is a salvation boat”.

Adebayo had earlier in the month submitted his letter of expression of interest to the SDP.
