Mogadishu’s Mayor has been injured and seven people were killed in a large blast at the municipal headquarters in the Somali capital, security official, Mohamed Hussein said on Wednesday.

Government officials were among those killed, Hussein said.
It was unclear whether the blast was the result of a suicide bombing.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but it has all the hallmarks of the al-Shabaab terrorist organisation.

“It’s the second major blast this week, after the militants killed 16 people in a suicide car bombing in the capital on Monday.

“The group regularly launches attacks on government buildings and hotels in the volatile nation in the Horn of Africa.

“The United States is supporting Somali forces as well as soldiers from the African Union (AU) in the fight against al-Shabaab, which is affiliated with the international al-Qaeda terrorist network,’’ Hussein said.

In 2017, more than 500 people were killed when a suicide bomber detonated a truck full of explosives in the capital, in the group’s worst-ever attack.
