Nollywood actor, Gbenga Richards, has died following a battle with acute diabetes and high blood pressure.
The actor’s death was announced on Facebook by the former head of operations at GALAXY TV, Femi Adewale on Thursday, May 12, 2022.
He wrote, “Good night Gbenga Richards. Another Nollywood Icon is gone. A gem is lost. My friend and brother is gone to be with his creator. May the lord rest your soul in Jesus’ name.”
Actress Clarion Chukwurah posted a picture of the deceased on her page and captioned how the death has affected her. She wrote, “This one hit me deeply.”
The actor has been reported to have been in and out of hospital due to his illness and his friends, in 2021, had solicited for funds for his welfare and health.
Friends like comic actor, Ime Bishop Umoh also known as Okon, and Emmanuel Ehumadu known as Labista, solicited for funds for the deceased.
Gbenga is best known for his roles in blockbuster movies like ’30 days’, ‘Darkest night’, ‘Sango’, ‘Mirror in the Sun’, ‘Betrayal by Love’, ‘Fighting Machine’ and others.
Femi Adewale, the former head of programs at GALAXY TV, announced Richards’ death on Facebook on Thursday, May 12.

Richards’ first appearance as an actor was to represent Nigeria with Hubert Ogunde at the Second World Black and African Festival of African Culture (FESTAC) in 1977.
He also featured in blockbuster movies like ‘Sango’, ‘Mirror in the Sun’, ‘Betrayal by Love’, ‘Fighting Machine’ and a host of others.
