Afrobeat singer, Alexander Abolore Akande, popularly known as 9ice, has stated how late Fela Anikulapo Kuti had given the platform, Afrobeat, for younger artistes after him.

He said the legend had something he recognised and stuck with it while everyone was trying to construct a name for their genre of music.

He said this in an interview with Sis Project Studios.

According to the “Street Credibility” crooner, Fela made Afrobeat what it is today. He said the platform has become a genre everyone climbs on to reach.

“Fela Anikulapo-Kuti gave us the platform which is Afrobeat for us to climb on top. We were trying to do Afropop.

“We were trying to do afrobeats. We were trying to do different names. But Baba already has something that the world recognized.

“Afrobeat taught me a lot. King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, and Fela Anikulapo-Kuti are our grandfathers. And I’m glad to be in existence to emulate or to follow what they’ve done.”

This is coming a few days after a viral video made by Burna Boy in an interview stated that Fela would have been heavily criticised by people on social media behind their smartphones before the government if the legend produced his kind of music in this generation.
